Of course, some dancers may pursue a professional career. But as Kelly explained, most students carry the lessons they learn in ballet into entirely different paths. Those lessons are powerful.

Starting as young as six, a dancer may work on the same skill for years, continuing all the way through age 18. That kind of commitment teaches young people that meaningful results are not always immediate.

It is a refreshing contrast to an instant-results world. Ballet teaches dancers how to appreciate the journey, stay committed to a goal, and recognize that hard work can take years to pay off.

Along the way, dancers build qualities that serve them wherever life takes them:

We are fortunate to be in the Houston area, where there are opportunities to travel downtown and see incredible productions. Still, there is something special about having a family-friendly, affordable live performance right in your own backyard.

For families with young children especially, convenience makes a difference. Kingwood Ballet works to make productions such as The Nutcracker and The Little Mermaid accessible to people who want to experience live dance without making a major trip into the city.

What It Takes to Put on a Kingwood Ballet Production

A finished ballet production can make everything look effortless. The dancers are prepared, the costumes are beautiful, and every element comes together on stage. What is less visible is the enormous amount of work required behind the scenes.

For a single production, planning begins about six months in advance. Rehearsals run for a minimum of three months, and dancers may spend anywhere from six to 20 hours each week in the studio, depending on their age.

And the dancers are only one part of the equation. Every one-weekend performance depends on a full local team, including:

• Five directors
• A lighting designer
• A costume designer
• Backstage crew
• A stage manager
• A dedicated parent army of volunteers

It takes many people who never step onto the stage to create the production that the community gets to enjoy. That collaborative effort is part of the magic. Local families, artists, volunteers, and businesses all come together to make something meaningful happen.

After reviewing the organization’s annual activities and production expenses, the Kingwood Ballet guild found that more than $500 is invested per dancer, per show to bring these productions to life.
