Kingwood Medical Center Volunteers Elaine and Jack Morrison
Jack and Elaine Morrison
Kingwood, Texas (June 14, 2017) — Kingwood Medical Center Volunteers Elaine and Jack Morrison have lived in the Kingwood area for over 30 years. The April 1983 issue of Flying Magazine did a feature story on this highflying couple, who have now been married for 46 years and between the two, have 6 children, 8 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren. Elaine and Jack are retired pilots, Jack from the Marines and Continental Express and Elaine from Continental Airlines. These "ex-cons" now devote their time to volunteering through Stephens Ministries and at Kingwood Medical Center.
Each week you will find Elaine in Kingwood Medical Center’s Day Surgery, where she checks in patients and family members, and keeps them informed as to the status of their loved one’s procedure. She provides a welcoming face and a good ear for families who are going through anxious times. Jack works at the information desk in the West Entrance and makes sure patients and guests know where they are going.
Elaine enjoys coming to the hospital because "It’s great to work with a super group of nurses. It is also nice to be of some help to families most of whom are concerned, nervous and unsure of how things go here." Jack is motivated to give back "We have been extremely blessed. My desire to volunteer was renewed by the fact that we make a difference."
It can be hard to find time to volunteer; however, the benefits of volunteering are enormous to you, your family and your community. The right match can help reduce stress, cultivate friendships, reach out to the community, and allow people to learn new skills. Giving to others can also help protect your mental and physical health. While it is true that the more you volunteer, the more benefits you will experience, volunteering does not have to involve a long-term commitment or take a huge amount of time of your busy day. Giving in even simple ways can help others those in need and improve your health and happiness.
Volunteering leaves an impact not only on Kingwood Medical Center and patients, but also on the volunteers. If you ask volunteers to name their favorite or most rewarding part of working at the hospital, they pause, take a moment to think and then — with a big smile — tell their story. "Most volunteers say there is nothing better than knowing they have helped someone in need. It doesn’t matter if a volunteer commits to an hour or four hours; it makes a difference to the ones who are being helped," remarked Jim Wall, director of imaging services and volunteer services.
